A recent survey showed that the most commonly used weight management strategy for Americans is to change the type of food they buy and ensure adequate exercise.
The International Food Information Commission recently released its 2015 food and health research report, which included 1007 Americans aged 18 to 80 years.
In this population, 51% of people chose to change the food category as their own strategy to manage weight, ranking first. The number of people who chose to exercise was 50%, ranking second.
What is the biggest obstacle to losing weight or keeping weight? Lack of willpower (37%) and lack of time (31%).
The report also shows that people's expectations of weight and the reality are different. It shows that 84% of people involved in the survey are losing weight or are maintaining their own weight, and 57% believe that they are in good health or in excellent physical condition. However, 55% of those who think they are in good health are overweight or obese. Many Americans have misunderstood the definition and understanding of health. The feeling of health in their hearts is actually far from healthy.
If the free time is 4 hours per week, exercise is the first choice of respondents (36%). Accompanying a friend or a family member ranked second (31%), relaxing and sleeping ranked third (29%), and doing housework ranked fourth (20%).
However, this report also shows that there is a gap between craving for exercise and spending in a fitness venue.
If you can get $100 more per week, only 9% of those surveyed are willing to pay for membership in a health club or spend money in sports venues. Most people (61%) choose to use this money to save, invest, or repay debt.
One hundred and forty-four of the participants in the survey had thought about physical fitness, and 53% seriously considered doing it. Those who have seriously considered to exercise are often better-looking people – university graduates and women. The proportion of people who are seriously considering to exercise has dropped continuously for three years. In 2013, this figure was 60%. Forty-one percent of people thought about fitness. In 2014, this number was 35%.
The survey also makes statistics on how people change their eating habits:
• 82% of people will try to eat more fruits and vegetables
• 76% of people reduce caloric intake by not drinking beverages or drinking reduced fat beverages
• 70% of people will eat more foods containing whole grains
• 68% of people will reduce their intake of high sugar or sugary foods
• 68% of people will buy smaller or lighter foods
This survey found that high-income earners would be more willing to screen food production methods and sources (where they are, whether they are organic foods, whether they contain hormones and steroids), and they also tend to avoid the intake of certain special ingredients (additives).
